{Wedding Design} Hanging Centerpieces!

The ceiling of a venue or tent creates a blank canvas for a designer to explore a world of possibilities in the scheme of decor! One trend I LOVE is hanging centerpieces and floral arrangements from the ceiling! While a bit untraditional, its a fresh and innovative way to add some pizazz to your party!

The idea of hanging centerpieces is perfect for events where guests are seated at long rectangular tables and space may be limited for big-impact decor. As you’ll see below, suspending decor from the ceiling adds a bit of fairytale illusion to your event space and who doesn’t want to create something magical for their guests to enjoy??

It’s also a beautiful embellishment for your food buffet, guest sign-in table, dessert bar or even the head table! Before you decide to hang anything from the ceiling, be sure to check with the venue to make sure they allow it.

Tips for Decorating Round Banquet Tables

Round tables are ideal for any room! If you want to add interest, try alternating sizes of tables such as (i.e. 60” rounds, which seat 8-10 guests and 72” rounds, which seat 10-12 guests). You could even incorporate square and rectangular tables into the mix! The great thing about rounds is that they are compatable with most situations and are versatile.
  1. Centerpieces – Choose two different types of centerpieces and intermix them. For example, you can use a tall, single arrangement on 50% of your tables and a low arrangement on the other 50%. For the low arrangements, try a trio of monochromatic arrangements in varying heights of 4”, 6” and 8”. Since the tables are round, incorporate some square vases into the mix.
  2. Linens – Stick with lighter shades of color for your tablecloths and incorporate accent color into the napkins, cake table and chair cushion covers. For white and ivory lovers, try a fun texture or pattern to add some pizazz!
  3. Table Accents – Create a beautiful and welcome presentation at each table setting by pulling such accents as menu cards, unique napkin folds, an eclectic mix of flatware, colored champagne flutes and chargers.
  4. Place Settings – Tables set with flatware, glassware and napkins create a welcoming presentation to wedding guests where a full meal will be served. Make sure you have a seat for everyone and that guests are assigned a specific table so that the banquet staff do not have to make last minute changes of adding chairs and settings to a certain table or worse, making a family sit separately because there was not a table with enough seats for them to be together.

Tips on Decorating Long Rectangular Tables

Rectangular Tables are Ideal in Spaces with:
  • High Ceilings
  • Tall Windows
  • Massive Floor Space
  • Any room that needs to be filled
  1. Tall Centerpieces – Break up the length of the table by incorporating a few tall centerpieces on each table. In between the tall centerpieces, use a long, narrow and short arrangement intermixed with candles. If your space allows, you can suspend an object over the center of the table to bring the eye upwards, as in the picture above.
  2. Table Runners – Elongate your table by utilizing décor down the center of the table. Table runners are the best way to add interest to your tables. Use bright, bold patterns over a simple tablecloth or, as pictured above, use a simple runner over a beautifully reclaimed wood table.
  3. Disburse Color Properly – Long tables have a lot of space to fill and can easily become overloaded with too many colors. Avoid this by using accent hues in a couple strategic locations such as chair cushion covers, table runner and the menu card.
  4. Accent the Shape of the Table – Use square plates and chargers to make a subtle point with its sharp sides. The shape mimics the table and creates a beautifully uniform look.
