Before baby Leiti #2 makes her debut sometime in the next week, I figured I would go out with a bang here on the blog by showcasing one of my favorite weddings of the year: Natalie and Ryan. Taking place on the beautiful coast of Hilton Head Island at Sonesta Resort, Natalie was the bride every planner loves to work with. She was calm, trusted my direction wholeheartedly, has a great sense of fashion (her sister after all is a fashion designer in NYC) and didn’t want to skimp on a single detail.

Natalie had “branding her wedding” at the top of her priority list, which always makes me excited! Her best friend Allison created a unique monogram and pattern that graced every detail of the wedding. From the paper products to the custom printed fabric for the pillows, guests were constantly reminded of this personalized element that was unique to only their wedding.

Brandon Lata captured their day beautifully and I am thrilled to share it with you here! Feast your eyes on this perfect day filled with beautiful details for a couple that warms your heart and puts a smile on your face:

Real Wedding: Dana and Matt

Dana and Matt were married at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa in late March 2014. Their ceremony and cocktail hour took place on the beautiful Oceanfront Deck and the reception took place at the adjacent Oceanfront Pavilion. They had around 100 guests in attendance for their destination wedding and the celebration was one for the books.

Dana’s style evoked classic elegance with a touch of glam. She wanted her wedding to reflect her style: preppy and refined. The groom, Matt, served in the United States Military Academy and during his time traveled through Korea, Germany, Afghanistan and Arizona. Being that Matt is a military man, he and Dana knew they wanted to incorporate a Saber Arch into their wedding ceremony. The Saber Arch is where a bride and groom pass under an honorary arch made of sabers or swords just after being announced husband and wife. The gentlemen holding the swords are dressed in uniform.

I started working with Dana and Matt about a year prior to their March 2014 nuptials. The couple lived in California so most of the planning was done from across the country via phone chats, shared Pinterest boards, emails galore and our handy dandy online planning software. They made two trips into town: one to pick their venue and one to meet with all of their vendors in person. It was a whirlwind of fun, which sure made the months fly by!

The team of vendors were hand picked by Dana and Matt and all came highly recommended by myself. Photography by Anne captured their wedding day beautifully and I am thrilled to share a handful of some of the images from their spring soiree!

6 Alternatives to Carrying a Bouquet

In ancient times, brides would carry bouquets comprised of garlic, herbs and spices thought to ward off evil spirits (and even the Plague!).  Luckily for today’s brides, these bouquets have evolved into full on floral mode!  However, some brides like to break today’s tradition completely and opt for a hands-free bouquet alternative.  Below are 6 unique head to toe options we have found to carrying your flowers down the aisle:

1.  Floral Crown – Popular with boho chic, vintage, and outdoorsy brides, the flower crown keeps the floral element going long after a bride has completed her walk down the aisle.  Like a traditional bouquet, most flower crowns can be customized to include specific flowers, colors, and sizes.

2.  Floral Wrap – Drape yourself like the Greek and Romans did in ancient times with a garland of flora and foliage around your neck.  This ancient tradition was thought to symbolize new life, hope and fertility.

3.  Wrist Corsage – Who says they are for the moms only?  A smaller version of a bouquet that you can wear all night long, free up your hands by electing a floral corsage to adorn your wrist.

4.  Flower Belt – Like a flower crown, but for your waist!  Dress up your dress with a pretty arrangement of flowers instead of a sparkly or beaded sash.  This doubles not only as an accessory but also as a floral component.

5.  Ankle Corsage – If you’re opting for a short dress on your wedding day, try a new spin on the traditional wrist corsage and wear it on your ankle!

 6.  Shoulder Strap – Have a strapless gown?  Talk with your florist and seamstress about creating a one-of-a-kind floral strap for your dress!

10 Tips for Packing for a Destination Wedding

It was 9:00 a.m. in the Bahamas as I began a nice, relaxing pre-wedding-weekend massage.  At 9:05 a.m., I sat straight up in sheer panic as I realized I had forgotten my veil, hanging in my closet, back in the United States.  How could I have forgotten my veil?!?

Packing for your destination wedding can be overwhelming and stressful as you try your best not to forget anything.  But, it doesn’t have to be.  A few weeks before you leave, make a list of everything and anything you could possibly need….a sewing kit, a steamer, your veil!!  Trust us, even if you think you will remember it, put it on your list!  After you complete your list, check with your hotel, resort, bed and breakfast, or wherever you are staying, to see if they provide any of these items.  If so, ask in advance if they will deliver those items to your room the day of.  This will not only lighten your load but will ease your mind knowing those items are already there for you.

Most destinations will have general stores, cantinas, or even Target’s where you will be able to purchase certain items.  No mascara?  No problem.  Forgot bobby pins?  Borrow some from the local salon.  Forgot your veil!?!?  Time to find a solution…..

Below are some recommendations for the must-have packing list for your destination wedding:

  1. His and Her Wedding Day Attire – You have put a lot of thought into your complete day-of look, so make sure you list everything from head to toe.  From hair accessories and jewelry for her, to bow-tie and socks for him.
  2. Gifts – If you are planning on giving gifts to your family or your wedding party, be sure to also think about packing boxes, wrapping paper (pre-cut), tape, ribbons and bows so that you can assemble the packages when you arrive at your destination.
  3. Family Heirlooms or Sentimental Trinkets – If you were given your mothers garter, your grandmothers necklace, or your fathers handkerchief to use as a part of your big day, be sure those come with you.  You won’t find those in any store, no matter where you are.
  4. Your Vows – If your vows are on paper, be sure they make it into your wallet, purse, or somewhere else on your person.  Sure, you may have memorized them or could partially re-create them, but if you poured your heart and soul onto that one piece of paper, you don’t want to leave that behind.
  5. Important Documents – If traveling internationally for your wedding, be sure you bring all required documents that you may need in order to obtain your marriage license.  Some places may require a passport, drivers license, and even birth certificate.  Additionally, be sure to bring along any vendor contracts, receipts of payment, etc. as proof or back-up.
  6. Honeymoon Clothes – If you are traveling to another destination for your honeymoon (with a different climate!), we recommend packing those clothes in an entirely different suitcase.  By keeping everything separate, it will help minimize the clutter and stress of it all.  Further, we recommend shipping your honeymoon clothes to where you will be staying so it is one less thing to worry about keeping track of!  RealSimple.com has put together an extensive list for packing for your honeymoon!
  7. Electronics – If you intend to play a video, a slideshow of photos, or specific music you may have on your computer, be sure to pack your electronics.  This includes chargers, cords, back-up batteries, external hard drives, converters (if traveling to a different country), etc.
  8. Beauty Essentials – Although American brands can be found almost everywhere, it is important to remember to bring the beauty items you use on a daily basis.  Trying out a different brand before your wedding day is not recommended, as there is always a chance you can develop a reaction to a product your skin is not used to.  So, stay away from hotel soaps, the facial scrub the locals swear by, and the no-name sunscreen sold in the cantina.

Happy packing!!!

The Beauty of Live Wedding Painters

Photography and videography are the go-to ways to capture all of the special moments from your wedding day. In addition, social media has taken on an increasingly important role in capturing the experience…guests taking “selfies” at the reception, the photo of the bride as she passes your seat walking down the aisle, that tender moment between the newlyweds when they thought no one was around. But most of these “captured moments” sit in the digital world or in a photobook on your coffee table. Why not translate these memories artfully on your wall as a daily reminder of that special day?

Low and behold, we introduce to you the art of painting the moment. A unique experience and emerging trend, artists are popping up at weddings to paint a bride and groom’s most treasured moment, whether it may be the first dance, the first kiss, or the first look. In the Lowcountry, we have a handful of local and incredibly talented artists who love to do just that.

Meet Teil Duncan

Teil_Duncan-Natalie_s_Favorites-0008_large

Teil Duncan, a native of Columbus, Georgia who now resides in Charleston, South Carolina is inspired by social interaction (amongst other things!), according to her website teilduncan.com. On Instagram (@teilduncanart), we caught her doing just that. Teil was snapped painting a scene from a bride and groom’s first dance! Hair up, apron on, Teil means business as she is seen artfully capturing that intimate moment…one the couple is sure to hang on their wall with love, pride, and adoration for all to see in the years to come. Teil’s website not only offers information on commissioning one of these memorable paintings, but also proves she is an artful influence on others! Check it out!

Meet Ben Keys

Ben Keys, with Wed On Canvas, also resides in Charleston, South Carolina but keeps his studio based in Wilmington, North Carolina. As quoted on his website, “A live event painting not only adds an entertaining and unique touch to your wedding day, but is also a gift to be treasured for generations.” We couldn’t agree more! Even though he is based in the Lowcountry, Ben’s website boasts a wonderful gallery showcasing a well traveled man, painting special moments, up and down the east coast! Here are a couple of our favorite pieces from Ben:

Meet Laura Welch

Laura Welch of Artistic I Weddings is yet another talented live wedding artist in the area. While she is based out of Charleston, SC, Laura loves to travel throughout the Lowcountry. She recently worked with us on a wedding in May and painted the scene from our bride and groom’s first dance. Laura is professional, friendly and easy to work with and we can speak from experience! Here are some of our favorites from Laura:

If you’re still having trouble thinking of the perfect gift to surprise your bride or groom-to-be with on your wedding day, hiring a live wedding artist is the way to go. It’s clever and unexpected and is something you’ll both cherish for the rest of your lives.

If you are looking for that trend-setting, one-of-a-kind, unique, engaging, memorable, and artful moment, consider commissioning a live wedding painter for your big day!

Planning a Weekday Wedding

WeekdayWedding

Today, we are taking a look at the increasingly popular weekday wedding. From experience, most couples tend to tie the knot over a weekend, with Saturdays being the most popular day followed by Fridays and then Sundays. Holiday weekends are also typically parlayed into wedding weekends (particularly destination weddings) to give attendants an extra travel day or just an extra day to celebrate. However, no matter what weekend you decide to get married, it can carry a hefty price-tag. According to theknot.com, “It’s a simple case of supply and demand.” Here are a few benefits of having a wedding during the week…

  1. Venue and vendor costs may be lower and more negotiable. Since mid-week events are not as popular, most venues will have more availability, lower rates, and more relaxed requirements. When deciding on a date, be sure to ask the price difference!
  2. Your guest list gets more intimate. Although most people tend to take a day or two off of work for weekend weddings, it might be more difficult for some to take extra days off for a mid-week wedding. Don’t be disappointed by the higher number of regrets, though. This will keep your list to a select, intimate group of supporters.
  3. Surprise! One way to produce that “wow factor” everyone looks for in a wedding is to make it a surprise! Inviting guests to an unassuming mid-week dinner and then walking down the aisle in a wedding gown is certainly an element of surprise no one will expect!
  4. Date specific? Don’t sweat it! If you have a specific date in mind, like the date you got engaged or the “once in your lifetime” numeric combination (11-11-11), don’t dismiss it because it falls on a weekday. If your heart is set on having that particular date, then there is no reason to have it any other way!
  5. Be different. If you are the couple that strives to stick out, stand above, and make a lasting impression, a weekday wedding can help accomplish that. Join the Europeans and the growing number of celebrities and have your wedding on……a WEDNESDAY!!!
