A Hilton Head Golf Tradition: Mad About Plaid

For the past 45 years, Hilton Head Island has been home to the PGA Tour’s Heritage Golf Tournament. Founded by Sea Pines designer Charles Fraser in 1969, the first tournament brought some of golf’s greatest to our tiny island. Over the years much of the Heritage Golf Tournament remains the same: the course, the legendary players, the large and rowdy crowds and of course the traditional plaid!

Tomorrow kick’s off the start of the tournament so I thought I would pay tribute and “Get My Plaid On” by providing our readers with some gorgeous photos of inspiration that incorporate this fun pattern. From favors and linens to even your attire, there are many ways to play up this theme without going over the top.

Happy Heritage y’all!

Megan and Brian Peachtree Photography

Nothing makes me happier in this industry than hearing from my newly married clients after the honeymoon to say how perfect their wedding day was thanks to the successful execution of the planning team.  Today, I received a sweet note from Megan and Brian that they shared with the rest of the world on Wedding Wire:

“Brian and I were so thrilled with the way that Jen was able to translate our ideas into a truly gorgeous event. Due to our schedules, we couldn’t be in the area for much of the planning, so we had to rely on her judgment– and we’re so glad we did! We enjoyed every minute of the big day, and could not have imagined a better outcome.”

Thank you Megan and Brian for  your kind words and for giving me the pleasure and honor to work with you the past year. Watching your wedding day go from concept to reality and then exceeding expectations while doing so is the reason I am so passionate about wild wedding world I work in. There is no greater reward than hearing how happy you were with the experience. Congratulations and best wishes you two!!

The holiday season is a great time to experiment with tabletop decor that can be incorporated into your wedding reception! Over the next few weeks, I’m sure you’ll be entertaining at some point. Take this as an opportunity to do a test run on some of the darling details you’ve thought about using for your wedding! From the napkin fold to the plate garnish, have fun trying out new ideas and getting creative!

Spray it Metallic – Spray paint is by far the easiest and cheapest way to transform any ordinary object into something luxurious. Some of my favorites are:

  • Leaves
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Figurines
  • Tips of Manzanita Branches
  • Shells
  • Glass
  • Thirfted Items (old candlesticks, frames, mirrors…you name it!)

Hand Painted Napkins – All you need is a cute stencil, some acrylic paint, fabric sealer and a paint brush to create these darling custom painted napkins!

Edible Elements – Using fresh herbs and foliage, whether homegrown or store bought, is a fabulous way to dress up a table with nature’s bounty.

Using Everyday Furniture – If you’re running low on dining room chairs, don’t be afraid to pull in accent chairs and furniture pieces from around the house. An ottoman or bench from the master suite paired with wingback chairs from the study will create a look that is chic, cozy and eclectic.

Combine Modern + Vintage – Using grandma’s china and crystal is a holiday tradition that is not to be broken. Pairing these vintage beauties with with modern elements will create a look that is both traditional and contemporary. Try using a fun charger, gold flatware or bold table linens.

Napkin = Focal Point – A linen napkin is not simply made for blotting your lips. When displayed properly, it completes the tablescape. You can get creative with your napkins from the napkin to the garnish. I love this idea of using a printed menu as a belly band for the napkin!

Don’t Forget The Kids – You never know how long those cute little ones will last before the first temper tantrum (or mashed potatoes) will be thrown, so give them something to occupy their time, at least long enough for their parents to eat! Head to your local hardware store and purchase a roll of brown builder’s paper and crayons to create an extra large canvas to play on! It will also double as their tablecloth/placemat!

Whether you’re hosting Christmas dinner or throwing an engagement party, here are some beautiful tablescape details that can be incorporated into any social gathering and later restructure the idea to use in your wedding reception table design!

The Proper Place Setting

You’ve pulled out grandma’s china, polished the silver and shined the crystal, all in preparation for the perfect Thanksgiving feast. Now it’s time to set the table! Do you know precisely where all of these lovely pieces go on each place setting? Here is a simple guide to reference and jog your memory. After all, like your heirloom china, silver and crystal, proper table etiquette never goes out of style.

formal-setting

Linens should be crisply pressed and luxurious in texture. The napkin should be nicely folded and placed on top of the base plate, or charger. For ideas and instructions on napkin folds, visit The Napkin Folding Guide here.

The Charger is the large under plate that the first course is served on top of. When it comes time for the main course, the entree plate is exchanged out with the charger. The charger will remain set for all courses preceding the main.

Forks are on the left side of the plate. As shown in the image above, the order for forks from left to right are: Fish, Entree, Salad. If the salad is preceding the entree and there is no fish course, the salad fork would stand to the left of the dinner fork, which would be closest to the plate.

Knives and Spoons go to the right of the plate. As shown in the image above, the order for knives are: Dinner knife, Fish knife. The soup spoon goes to the right of the knives and the oyster fork goes last. No more than 3 of any utensil is ever placed on the table at the same time, with the exception of oyster forks. Knife blades are always turned toward the charger plate.

Butter Plate goes above the forks on the left side of the plate.

Glassware is placed above the knives. The water goblet is first and is placed above the knives. To the right is a champagne flute. Below the flute come your wine glasses. No more than 5 glasses should be placed on the table at the same time.

Dessert Spoons and Forks are brought in on the dessert plate when the course is served.

Place Cards should be used to direct guests to their chair. This is where you can get creative and pull in some beautiful details to your table.

An Informal Place Setting is a scaled down version of the image above. The salad plate and coffee cup are placed on the table. The salad plate goes to the left of the forks and the coffee cup and saucer go to the right of the drinking glass, above the spoon.

There is nothing better than gathering around the table with those dearest to your heart to give thanks for all of your blessings. Many of you will play host to family and friends in celebrating of Thanksgiving on Thursday. Your dining table will serve as a focal point for the day and will be the center for all the action. Ensuring your table is properly set and adorned with beautiful details will leave a lasting impression on your guests and help create beautiful memories. So pull out the fine china and polish the silver and crystal because this is one holiday that deserves the very best in the house! Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

13 Jaw Dropping Bridal Gowns For Fall 2014

Bridal Fashion Week just wrapped up on Monday and my heart is doing flip flops over the latest and greatest collections from the industry’s top designers. This year, Vera Wang really knocked my socks off with her shades of pink gowns. From coral to peony and everything in between, PINK was the hot topic this season. To that I once again say, “Bravo Vera!” She shocked us with red in 2012, black and white last season and now it’s pink. I wonder what color will be next!

Another trend I’m loving, thanks to Romona Keveza, is pairing metal belts with traditional silhouettes to create a youthful and modern look. If you’re the fashion savvy type, this look might be for you.

Other trends I’m loving for fall 2014 bridal collections:

  • Metallic threadwork
  • Peplum and fly away waist lines
  • Floral appliques
  • Re-embroidered lace
  • T-length styles
  • Plunging necklines

If these were the dresses of Bridal Fashion Week 2008, the year I married my sweet hubby, my choice would be this blush and gold number from Romona Keveza…metallic belt and all. I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE everything about it!
